In the summer of 1995 Lyn Gerber and Jim Dugan met on the
tennis court. Lyn's love for coaching and Jim's passion for
wheelchair sports created an immediate bond. Jim introduced
Lyn to the world of wheelchair sports and they both
volunteered many hours for local organizations. A common
dream formed and in January of 1999, Lyn and Jim officially incorporated as The
Gateway Confluence Wheelchair Sports Foundation. The following August The
Confluence received its not for profit 501 (c) (3) tax exemption from the
federal government.
The Confluence has its physical office in Jim's home in Bethalto,
Illinois, but the office visible to the public is at the gym, court, or
field. Utilizing sports facilities throughout the St. Louis area and Central
Illinois, Jim and Lyn conduct most programs and practices as well as manage
the daily operations. The Directors at Large bring their individual
expertise to The Confluence and are invaluable in their specific roles.
The success of The Confluence is measured by each individual who
experiences the joy of accomplishment no matter what the task or skill.
Daily, Lyn and Jim strive to execute the following Mission Statement:
To identify people with disabilities and to
provide them with coaching and training that
will continue their rehabilitation and
socialization, through both recreation and
competitive sporting events.
To promote, organize, and present wheelchair
sports events in our regional area.
To assist school, social and fraternal
organizations in educational opportunities for
their members regarding ability awareness. |
The Confluence serves the people of The
Greater St. Louis Region, which we define as anywhere
within a two hundred mile radius. Our name defines us in
a unique way with wheelchair and sports being simply
definitive. The derivation of Confluence is……….
|
“com = together + fluere =
flow, together flow or flow together.
The accent is on the first syllable. A hard K
sound. Con-fluence. |
St Louis, situated at the confluence
of three major rivers, The Mississippi, The Missouri,
and The Illinois is central to our region and we believe
that people working and coming together to share the
good of wheelchair sporting is central to The
Confluence’s mission.
The Confluence provides free programs,
competition, equipment, entry fees, travel, and coaching
to its athletes who range in age from six to
seventy-seven in basketball, sit volleyball, softball,
tennis, and water skiing.
Education is an important part of our activities.
Yearly, thousands of school children “ roll a mile on
our wheels ” in our school presentations. Ability
awareness, realization of the opportunities available,
and respect for the wheelchair user are just of few of
the lessons learned.
The Confluence is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit
organization that depends upon the kindness of friends,
family, and friendly acquaintances for support and fund
raising.
